Steam Demo Guide
How to create a compelling demo that converts players into wishlists and builds momentum for launch.
Why Release a Demo?
Demos are one of the most effective wishlist-building tools available. Events like Steam Next Fest generate massive visibility, and players who try your demo are significantly more likely to wishlist and purchase.

Setting Up Your Demo
Technical Setup
- In Steamworks, go to your app → Associated Packages & DLC
- Click "Create New Demo"
- This creates a separate App ID for your demo
- Upload your demo build to the demo App ID
- The demo automatically links to your main game's store page
Demo Store Page
Your demo gets its own mini store page, but it's primarily accessed through your main game's page via a "Download Demo" button. You can customize:
- Demo-specific screenshots (optional)
- Demo description
- System requirements (if different from full game)
What to Include in Your Demo
Ideal Demo Content
- 15-45 minutes of gameplay — Long enough to hook, short enough to leave wanting more
- Core gameplay loop — Show what players will actually DO
- Your best content — Don't start with tutorial slog
- A satisfying ending point — Cliffhanger or clear "this is where full game continues"
- Polish — This is players' first impression; bugs hurt
Don't give away too much: If players feel satisfied by the demo, they're less likely to purchase. Leave them wanting more.
Demo Strategies
- Vertical slice: Polished chunk of early-game content
- Tutorial + hook: Teach mechanics, end on exciting moment
- Time-limited: Full game access for 1 hour
- Separate content: Unique demo scenario not in full game
Steam Next Fest
Steam Next Fest is a week-long festival showcasing upcoming games with demos. It's one of the best marketing opportunities for indie developers.
How to Participate
- Have a Coming Soon page live
- Have a playable demo available
- Register for the event in Steamworks (deadlines apply)
- Optionally, stream your game during the event
Next Fest Tips
- Launch demo early: Don't wait until Next Fest to release your demo
- Update before the event: Fix any known issues
- Stream daily: Live streams get visibility in the event
- Engage with feedback: Respond to comments and discussions
- Track analytics: Monitor downloads and wishlists
Next Fest happens ~3 times per year. Plan your demo release to coincide with one of these events for maximum impact.
Demo Best Practices
Before Release
- Playtest extensively — first impressions matter
- Include clear wishlist prompt at the end
- Add Discord/social links for community building
- Test on multiple hardware configurations
After Release
- Monitor discussions and reviews
- Fix critical bugs quickly
- Respond to player feedback
- Update demo if significant improvements are made
When to Remove Your Demo
Common approaches:
- Keep it forever: Ongoing marketing tool
- Remove at launch: Prevents demo-only players
- Remove after post-launch period: Best of both worlds
Demo vs Early Access
Demos and Early Access serve different purposes:
- Demo: Free, limited content, no commitment from player
- Early Access: Paid, full current content, player invested
You can have both — a demo alongside Early Access is common and effective.
Common Demo Mistakes
- Too long: 2-hour demos exhaust interest before purchase
- Too buggy: First impression becomes "this game is broken"
- No hook: Boring content doesn't drive wishlists
- No CTA: Forgetting to ask for wishlist
- Wrong content: Tutorial-only demos don't show the real game
