How to avoid trademark issues, handle game comparisons, and properly attribute assets.
Legal issues can delay or kill your launch. Trademark infringement, unlicensed assets, or improper game comparisons will get your page rejected — or worse, your game removed.
You want to say your game is "like Dark Souls" — but be careful how you phrase it.
"Better than Dark Souls"
"The next Dark Souls"
"Dark Souls killer"
"Challenging combat inspired by souls-like games"
"For fans of difficult action RPGs"
"Souls-like mechanics with a twist"
Reference the genre or style, not the trademark. "Souls-like" has become a genre term. "Dark Souls" is a trademark owned by FromSoftware/Bandai Namco.
You need explicit permission. Fan games using existing IP (Pokémon, Mario, etc.) require written authorization from the rights holder. "It's a tribute" or "I'm not making money" doesn't protect you.
If you use assets from the Unity Store, Unreal Marketplace, or freelancers, check your license terms. Some require attribution. Include credits where required.
