Steam Store Page Description Guide
How to write an "About This Game" section that actually gets approved.
Your description is your sales pitch. Valve expects substance — not placeholder text, not pure marketing fluff, and not a wall of vague promises.
Minimum Requirements
- At least 300 words — Thin descriptions get flagged
- Actual gameplay info — What does the player DO?
- No placeholder text — "Coming soon" sections are commonly rejected
- Clear structure — Headers, paragraphs, maybe bullet points for features
What to Include
Lead with Gameplay
Start by explaining what the player actually does. Don't bury this after three paragraphs of lore.
Be Specific
Instead of "explore a vast world," say "explore 50+ handcrafted dungeons across 5 distinct biomes." Numbers and specifics sell.
List Key Features
Bullet points are acceptable here. Highlight 4-8 major features players care about.
Include Content Scope
How many hours of gameplay? How many levels, characters, weapons? Give players a sense of value.
What to Avoid
❌ Pure Marketing Speak
"Experience a revolutionary gameplay experience that will change the way you think about gaming forever."
❌ Placeholder Text
"Full description coming soon! Stay tuned for more details."
❌ Wall of Lore
"In the year 3047, after the Great Cataclysm destroyed the Seven Kingdoms of Eldrath..." [500 words of backstory with no gameplay info]
Good Description Structure
- Hook — One sentence that captures the core experience
- Gameplay overview — What do you do? How does it play?
- Key features — 4-8 bullet points
- Content scope — Hours, levels, modes, etc.
- Story/setting — Brief context (if relevant)
Word Count Tips
300 words is the minimum, but 400-600 tends to perform better. Don't pad with fluff — add genuine detail:
- Expand on each feature with one extra sentence
- Add examples of specific content (weapon types, enemy varieties, biomes)
- Mention unique mechanics that set you apart
- Include multiplayer details if applicable
What Our Check Looks For
- Word count (flags if under 300)
- Placeholder phrases ("coming soon", "TBD", "to be announced")
- Excessive marketing language without substance
- Missing gameplay verbs (play, fight, build, explore, etc.)
